With Labor Day Weekend comes the end of summer. To celebrate, people usually partake in different traditions such as road trips, barbecues, fireworks, and more. While these are intended to be fun and exciting events, these activities can also present certain hazards. It is because of this that people should be cautious when participating in the festivities. This can be done by implementing the following safety tips throughout the weekend.
Driver Safety
Many people travel during Labor Day Weekend. Last year, AAA reported that about 35 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more. Roads often become congested with different types of vehicles at all times throughout the weekend. It is because of this that it is crucial for drivers to follow the rules of the road. This can include taking the following safety precautions:
- Have a driving plan
- Wear a seatbelt at all times
- Be patient while driving
- Stay alert
- Contact local law enforcement in the event of a drunk driver
It is important to never drink and drive. Doing so can put many lives at risk for serious injuries or even death. Drunk drivers can face harsh consequences if they are convicted.
Water Safety
Many people celebrate their weekend in the water, whether it may pools, lakes, or oceans. It is important to stay safe during these activities. This can be done in the following ways:
- Do not consume alcohol while swimming or driving a boat
- Carry safety equipment such as flotation devices and first aid kits
- Always wear life preservers
- Do not dive head first
- Swim with a buddy
- Never leave a child unattended near water or in it
- Be aware of no-swim zones or shallow/deep areas
Grilling Safety
Often times, people barbecue during the holiday weekend. Grills can be dangerous if they are used unsafely. It is important to implement the following safety precautions around a grill so that no one becomes injured:
- Keep the grill away from the house or things that can catch fire (trees, bushes, etc.)
- Keep children and pets away from the grill
- Avoid using a charcoal starter or lighter fluid once coals are lit
- Clean the grill after use
- Keep spray water on hand in case of flare-ups
Firework Safety
Fireworks are very exciting, but can also be dangerous if they are used unsafely. While celebrating, it is important to buy legal fireworks and use them properly. People can stay safe by participating in the following actions:
- Wear eye protection
- Do not ignite indoors or in your hands
- Have adults present at all times
- Keep water nearby in the event of a fire
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket
- Don’t throw or point fireworks at people
- Stay a safe distance away after lighting the display
- Do not consume alcohol while handling fireworks
